Yet another new classic by Billy and his Famous Headcoats, the title comes from a project Billy did when he was at school and the CD is title "17% Hendrix was not the only musician" so I presume Billy didn't do too well for this project. I am glad he has improved and this record is worth more than 17%.
As usual you get a good mixture of different type of music ranging from blues "Salty Dog"; solo "The Bitter Cup"; duet "This Wond'rous Day", with Kyra (I think) to outright punk "Pinhead". The latter there seems to be a bit of mixing going on there grabbing parts from some of his other records.
All tracks are new although some have been recorded in various guises throughout Billy's illustrious career, only one is a cover that being "Teenage Kicks" a brilliant cover of The Undertones original.
To confuse everyone more than usuall when try to collect Billy's records, this one is released on different labels and formats in different countries. The vinyl in America on Sympathy and the CD in the UK on Slab-o-Concrete, the later also comes with a book.
The CD/book version is around 90 pages with loads of colour reproductions of Billy's paintings, Groups Hangmans communications, photos of Billy throughout the years, poems, woodcuts, a short story from a novel in progress, an excellent history and of course the CD. Brilliant value for money giving an excellent insight into all of Billy's works.
Since 1977 Billy Childish has published over thirty collections of poems, recorded eighty full length LPs and painted well over a 1500 paintings.
For the first time all the talents of this most prolific and eclectic artist of modern times have been brought together within one publication. Paintings, woodcuts, poetry, fiction, biography and photographs from Childishs career feature alongside a brand new release from his group Thee Headcoats.
Childish is a cult figure in Europe, Japan and the United States, this book/CD confirms him as a man who refuses to accept any limits to the expression of art.
Billy Childish has released records (solo or with Thee Headcoats, Milkshakes or many other bands) on a heap of labels including Sub Pop, K Records, Vinyl Japan, Sympathy For The Record Industry and Columbia (Japan). Blur and Beck have cited him as an influence.
His novels are published by Codex in the UK and Sun Dog in the USA. Poetry collections are published by Hangman Books.
Childish and Thee Headcoats have toured extensively in the USA, Continental Europe, Japan and of course the UK causing a storm of praise wherever they go.

By far the best version is the CD/book on Slab-O-Concrete, because of the book you get with it. Although the Japanese version does come with a lyric sheet.
