| Bruce...the typical quiet drummer, I don't think. He is involved in far more groups than Thee Headcoats and I have finally got round, to compiling some sort of discography for him.
Anyway on with the show! Hasty Bananas! |
Auntie Vegetable
Sexton Ming - vocals, top-hat & cape, kitchen knives
Stoop Solo (Bruce) - psychedelic Telecaster, "Zofo" embroidered flares & long
hair(!)
Dan Stardust (Jamie Taylor) - Hammond Ogron (like out of Dr Who)
Rock Action (Alan Crockford) - bass & dourness
Kid Aphrodite (Ian Smith - Vic Templar from A/Shanks) -
drums.
Acid rock piss-take outfit formed about 1984 to cheese off the regulars at
the Nag's Head, Rochester. (Front bar full of "our crowd",
modswithsticksuptheirarses, cool-cats etc. Back bar infested with greasy
bikers & the like). Played stuff like Interstellar Overdrive, Boris the
Spider, White Room, Fire etc. wearing horrid 70's parafernalia, long wigs &
stuff. Figured our lot would hate the material & the bikers the
"unprofessionalism" & obvious piss-take. But no. Original "one-off" show was
resounding success, so (foolishly) did loads more. It got worse & worse,
until the joke wore a bit thin & we knocked it on the head. Although not
before recording a handful of prime cuts:
"Fire" ("I am the God of... etc.)
"Train Kept A-rollin" (Yardbirds version)
" Stroll On" (from "Blow up" as above)
"Glendora" (Downliners Sect "obscure classic" - if there is such a thing)
"Jack the Ripper" (Sutchy's "anthem" - R.I.P. etc.)
I think all these have seen the light of day on various Hangman Samplers & Powerhouse albums. Would still like to see 'em released in their own right, though. An EP - "Glendora Strolls On In The Crazy World Of Jack The Ripper" (ahem!) never quite saw the light of day. But it's never too late. (I always say).
The Kravin' "A" 's
Apart from the LP "Krave On" (orig. on Hangman) & the re-ish Get Hip LP/CD,
we did a 4-track EP for Screaming Apple (Germany) in1993 - "Pushin' &
A-Shovin' ", which went thus:
A1. "Born Yesterday" (orig.)
A2. "Your'e Lookin' Fine (Kinks, as covered by Thee H's)
B1. "Right Now" (orig., not the MelTorme/Creatures no.)
B2. "Don't Gimme No Lip" (Dave Berry classic - B-side of "The Cryin'
Game")
Also split 45 on Larsen with The Slow Slushy Boys.
"Shop Around" (Smoky Robinson/Bern Elliot et. al. doin's)
The Kravin "A" 's:
Glen Prangnell - vocals, rhythm guitar, songs (formerly of The Offbeats -
Medway beat combo of early 80's/Johnny & the Bandits/Goodchilde)
Johnny Barker - vocals, bass (Daggermen,/Johnny & the
Bandits/GoodChilde/Dodson's Dogs)
Wolf Howard - drums (Daggermen,/JTQ/Johnny & the Bandits/GoodChilde/Dodson's
Dogs. Replaced John "Agnew" Gawen from Thee Milkshakes/Caesars)
BB - lead guitar, b/vox
The Clique were the biggest & probably the best band on the London Mod scene
for nigh on 10 years. (Until I joined 'em - heh, heh).
Released a handful of singles & tracks on various comp. albums over the
years, but one & only album - "Self Preservation Society" - finally saw the
light of day 1995 on Detour Records.
The Clique:
Trevor French - vox. (Went on to form Knave)
(Followed by Pete 'Speed' Wild, Alex Petty & Chris Jordan respectively)
Dom Strickland - Hammond
Phil Otto - bass
Matthew Braim - drums (recently in Quant, still in The Surrounds w/Parsley on
bass)
BB - guitar (replaced John-Paul Harper - guitar god, bearded wonder & bald
bastard than me(!) - latterly of Knave)
45's:
"Bareback Donkey Riding" b/w "Security" (Otis R.)
"Save Me (Aretha/Nina Simone etc. etc...) b/w "The Fish
Down Gina's" (instrumental)
"Hello Sunshine" b/w "After Five" & "Hanging Around" (all
orig.)
"Hello Sunshine" not only featured everyone who had ever been in the Clique
(virtually) over the previous 10 or so years, but was recorded (not quite
acrimoniously) well after they'd split up/fallen out/weren't talking/killed
each other and whatever elsr aging Mods get up to...)
Not bad, eh?
MICKEY & LUDELLA
BEDLAM A' GO-GO (Vinyl Japan • ASKLP/CD-52 •1995)
Mickey - vocals, guitars, Ludella - vocals, Johnny Johnson - bass, guitar, Bruce Brand - drums, percussion
If my Spanish is as good as it was, Bruce also produced Doctor Explosion's (LP/CD) El Loco Mundo de los Jóvenes (1994) at Toe Rag Studios on Subterfuge Records
10 Benson
Bruce played drums for these for there supporting slot with Joe Strummer - May 2000
